Marketplace: Social networking sites help job search
Marketplace did a good, short piece on social networking and job searching this Monday, President’s Day.
Take 3 minutes to listen (or read the transcript in the link above) – and pay particular attention to the last section.
Companies are so deluged by resumes, they are beginning NOT to list their openings instead. Whereas they want a handful of good resumes, they are getting hundreds, and even thousands instead.
This means networking now connects you with listings that aren’t published at all.
Here’s a related anecdote: A good friend in recruiting at a local hospital said they ran ad for medical researchers recently. They have one opening. They usually get 5 resumes. Instead, they got 45 – and several were overqualified.
